The more ocean lovers there are, the better it is!

By Tania Militello Being based at the Four Seasons Resort Seychelles, part of my daily routine as Reef Restoration Project Officer is to meet with resort guests, talk with them about the project and its aim, and help people get to know more about the wonderful marine life at our doorstep. The interest most of the guests show for the “coral gardening” concept, and the support they give us every day is very rewarding. A few weeks ago, for example, …

Why I want to save our reefs

By Annie Vidot Hello there! My name is Annie, I am an 18 years young girl and I study “Fisheries Science“ at the Maritime Academy of Seychelles. I was born and raised in Seychelles, and my father, who was a dive instructor, instilled in me the love for the ocean. I have been working with the WiseOceans team at Four Seasons Resort Seychelles during weekends for three months and now as part of my school training, I am starting the second …

A special “welcome back”

By Tania Militello Going back to Italy for holidays was of course amazing. I spent time with my family and friends, ate all the good food possible, gained 2 kgs (of course!), brought back some divine chocolate treats from Italy to share with my colleagues, and the time ran so fast I cannot believe it’s already gone! However I am now really glad to be back at work. Yes, I know it’s hard to believe it, but I am one …

Joining the WiseOceans team

By Annie Vidot As a young Seychellois, I have extreme passion for marine life. When I first heard about WiseOceans I always wondered what they do without realising that one day I would be part of this amazing team who also share this interest. During my days with WiseOceans I have been working with Tania, the Reef Restoration Project Officer, learning about the Reef Restoration Project at Four Seasons Resort Seychelles and the different methodologies used. Using my rapidly improving duck diving skills I am …

Because we love the reef!

By Tania Militello At WiseOceans and Four Seasons Resort Seychelles we love our skin, but we love the reef, too! This is why the resort provides special reef-friendly sunscreen products for all their guests, pictured here amongst the equipment in the Coral Cabana. Evoa, by EQ, is an example of a sunscreen which doesn’t have the same impact upon coral that many regular sunscreens do, impacts which can increase bleaching of coral reefs for example (read more about this in the links …

A Thousand!

By Tania Militello “A thousand what?” you will ask. Coral fragmentsLast week we announced on our latest news page (and Facebook too) that we have reached our first milestone for our Reef Restoration Project: a thousand rescued coral fragments in the coral nursery! Since the official launch, only just over 3 months ago, the 26th March 2015, we have collected, cleaned, doctored and loved a thousand coral fragments. To be 100% honest we had expected to have a thousand fragments …

So you think you want to be a marine biologist?

By Tania Militello You want to swim with dolphins, talk to the manta rays and plunge into warm, crystal clear tropical waters? Interesting… I really love this job, and I know for sure that all marine biologists feel the same. However I sometimes get the feeling that most of the students and young “marine biologists to be” do not quite know the real meaning of being a marine biologist. Recently we had the amazing chance to have young Seychellois marine enthusiasts to join our …

Project beginnings: how to build a Reef Restoration Project

By Lindsay Sullivan This is very first blog post for the Reef Restoration Project at Four Seasons Resort Seychelles and the only one from me. Going forward you’ll be hearing regularly from Tania, our Reef Restoration Project Officer, as she gets this exciting, ground-breaking project truly under way. But now, for the first post, it’s only right that we tell you about how the project came to fruition and so, as the person responsible for the project design and set up, …
